Cool Facts:
#1 One of the three main virgin goddesses (Athena, Artemis, and Hestia)
#2 See Poseidon's Cool Fact #2.
#3 Athena was born from Zeus' head! Before Hera, his first wife was Metis, the goddess of good counsel and wisdom. He was afraid that his kid would overthrow him, just like he overthrew his dad, and just like his dad overthrew his dad's dad. So he turned Metis into a fly and swallowed her. But at that time she was already pregnant, and somehow she ended up in Zeus' head, so Athena was born in his skull. And she grew up inside it too. As she was getting bigger Zeus started having these really bad headaches, and finally he couldn't stand it so he asked Hephaestus and Ares (by that time he'd already married Hera so Hephaestus and Ares were already alive) to split his head open (since he's immortal it wouldn't actually harm him) to see what was going on. So they did. And out popped Athena, already dressed in a full battle outfit! Athena really was the original 'brainchild'. Literally.
PS. Metis seemed to have died sometime during the time she and Athena were in Zeus' skull. There's no further mention of her.
#4 She is the favourite child of Zeus out of all seven of his Olympian children.
